Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister of Transportation Suntana encouraged regional governments to optimize the resources they possess to improve integrated public transportation services to meet people's needs effectively and efficiently.
Suntana made the statement at the Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on Regional Resources Optimization for Public Transportation at the office of the Ministry of Transportation in Jakarta on Wednesday.
He underlined that the central government cannot work alone in resolving transportation issues, thereby necessitating collaboration with regional governments.
He expounded that collaboration encompasses planning, coordination, and budgeting to realize affordable transportation.
Suntana further noted that strategy and innovation are deemed necessary in managing regional revenue, including tax, regional levy, and other funds related to the transportation sector.
He noted that based on Government Regulation Number 35 of 2023, regional governments can use 10 percent of the revenue from motor vehicle tax for public transportation development.
Nevertheless, the funds must be utilized with thorough synergy, coordination, and discussion.
"The utilization must be in accordance with the central government programs," he said while reminding the regional governments.
On the same occasion, Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Bima Arya Sugiarto underlined that regional governments must be open to transportation technology and concepts suitable to the conditions of residents and the regions.
In addition, they are urged to create integrated transportation and forge cooperation to create impactful benefits for the community.
Sugiarto emphasized that the transportation sector is vital in boosting regional economic growth.
"If the transportation is smooth, integrated, and connected, it will impact regional revenue and others," he noted.
Wednesday's FGD was held to create strategic recommendations and policies to optimize the regions' resources to support sustainable public transportation.
It could also generate inputs for drafting the Home Affairs Minister's Regulation, which will serve as a guideline for implementing financing in regions.
