Surabaya, E Java, Feb 17 (Antara) -- Airlangga University (Unair) in Surabaya can transform the city into a national healthcare service and science center, considering the potential of its professional workers and the availability of adequate equipment, Mayor Tri Rismaharini said.
\"The people of Kalimantan do not need to travel to neighboring countries for medical treatment because doctors and medics there are graduates from Unair. They should come to Unair, instead,\" she stated during the launch of a hospital to treat infections (RSKI) in the premises of the university on Tuesday.
Unair should recover what the East Java provincial capital once had, Rismaharini remarked.
She was accompanied by Rector of Unair Professor Dr. H. Fasich Apt and President Director of RSKI Prof. Dr. Boerhan Hidayat SpA(K).
\"While the Dr. Soetomo Regional General Hospital functions as a healthcare service center, Universitas Airlangga Hospital as a medical education center, and RSKI as a healthcare research center, Unair can serve as the national healthcare center in Surabaya,\" she pointed out.
Rismaharini, who is the first woman to become the mayor of Surabaya, further challenged Unair to turn the dream of making the city a national, and even international, healthcare center into reality.
\"I am prepared to help make breakthroughs, including procuring tax-free medical equipment and securing practice permits for the three hospitals,\" she affirmed.
In response, President Director of RSKI Professor Dr. Boerhan Hidayat SpA(K) noted that the mayor\'s wish to turn Surabaya into a center for healthcare and science (SHSC) was in line with Unair\'s ideas.
\"If the wish for the SHSC is realized, people from all over the country can come to Surabaya to get any kind of disease treated. With its own hospital, Unair is equipped to treat diseases that are prevalent in Indonesia and the rest of the world. We have facilities and experts,\" he affirmed.
He added that the RSKI was equipped with the best facilities, including DNA microarray technology. \"RSKI is the only hospital in Indonesia with such an instrument,\" he said. (*)
