Anti-Draft Agency to Oppose Direct Appointment of KPK Leader

Jakarta (Antara) - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) will oppose if the President issues a decree or presidential regulation in lieu of law on direct appointment of KPK leadership. "We affirm that we will oppose any issuance of a presidential regulation in lieu of law or presidential decree by the government to appoint a (KPK) leader. We don't want that because the characteristic of such an appointment can be hazardous," KPK Chairman Abraham Samad said prior to a hearing with the Commission III of the House of Representatives (DPR) at the Parliament building here Monday. Samad observed that a presidential regulation in lieu of law was not needed because the situation and condition of KPK was not critical. The KPK's leadership normally consists of five members: one chairman and four deputies. One of the KPK Deputies, Busyro Muqoddas, will end his tenure on December 10, but will apply for a second term. Samad opposed any intention of the government to directly appoint a KPK deputy. The members of the KPK leadership are usually selected through fit-and-proper tests by the Parliament. (*)
