Surabaya Gears up for Construction of Low-Cost Flats

Surabaya, E Java (Antara) -- The Surabaya city government is gearing up for the construction of six low-cost flats in several parts of the East Java provincial capital. Head of the city\'s Building and Land Management Office Maria Theresia Ekawati Rahayu said here on Wednesday that she had proposed the construction of six low-cost flats to the Public Works Ministry on January 2. \"The cost of constructing the flats on land owned by the city government will be borne entirely by the central government,\" she stated. The flats will have five floors each. Six blocks of the flats will be built in Keputih, six blocks in Dukuh Menanggal, four blocks in Sememi, one block in Jambangan, and one block in Penjaringan Sari. \"We plan to complete the construction of some of the flats this year. If the land is ready, the Public Works Ministry can start building them soon,\" Rahayu affirmed. The city has already built a number of flats in the areas of Romokalisasri, Bandarejo and Siwalankerto. \"While the flats in Siwalankerto are operational, those in Romokalisasri are ready, and those in Bandarejo are in the final stage of construction,\" she noted.
