Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto has underlined the need to protect children from the negative impacts of digital technology through the issuance of the Government Regulation concerning Governance for Child Protection in the Implementation of Electronic Systems.
At the launch of the regulation at Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Friday, the President said that the regulation was drafted based on inputs provided by various stakeholders concerned with children.
"We are here for a very important event, for our children. They are the future of the Indonesian nation, who will continue the struggle and development toward a prosperous, safe, united, and just country," he added.
The regulation was prepared based on reports on the serious threat of digital media misuse that could harm children.
After hearing different inputs, the President gave his prompt approval for protection measures.
"At that time, I immediately approved all the suggestions. I said, continue (preparing the regulation), by consulting with all parties. Big countries have also made efforts to protect children in the digital world," he noted.
President Prabowo further said that digital technology can be a tool for progress, but it also has the potential to be destructive if not managed properly.
He warned of the dangers of digital content that can have a negative impact on the morals, psychology, and character of Indonesian children.
"Our children must grow creatively, be physically and mentally healthy, brave, independent, and optimistic. Rapid negative developments through digital media are very dangerous if not managed properly," he added.
He also lauded all parties who contributed to the formulation of the regulation, including the Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, the Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture, as well as national figures concerned with child protection.
"This is the work of all of you. I heard your suggestions, and today we realize real protection for Indonesian children," he said.
