RI Embassy in Cairo Calls on Citizen to Obey Curfew

Cairo - The Indonesian Embassy in Cairo has called on all Indonesians in the city to obey the newly announced nightly curfew, Defense Attache Colonel Teguh Isgunanto said here on Saturday. "Egypt is now in the process of becoming a more democratic country. Therefore we, as foreigners, need to respect that and avoid intervening," he said. Local authority in Egypt last Friday (May 4) imposed a curfew at night in the city, especially in Maidan Abbasea and areas around the Ministry of Defense's complex. According to the policy, people are not allowed to leave their homes from 11 P.M until 07 A.M. The curfew is being established following a clash between protesters and the police in the Maidan Abbasea area last Wednesday (May 3) that resulted in 12 dead and 170 others injured. Currently there are 5,000 Indonesians living in Egypt, most being students at Al Azhar University. (*)
