Surabaya, East Java (ANTARA) - At least 13 people died, while 12 others sustained serious injuries after a bus overturned on the left side of the Surabaya-Mojokerto section of the Trans Java toll road on Monday morning.
The Surabaya-bound bus, carrying aboard 25 people, was traveling at medium speed on the slow lane when it met with the accident, Chief of the Highway Patrol Unit at the East Java Provincial Police Adjunct Senior Commissioner Dwi Sumrahadi stated here on Monday.
However, when the bus arrived at kilometer 712+200 of the toll road, it veered to the left and rammed into a variable message sign (VMS) pole on the side of the toll road and overturned, he revealed.
"As a result of the accident, 12 people were seriously injured and 13 others died," he remarked.
Sumrahadi said the police had managed to move all victims of the bus accident to the hospital.
He believed that the accident occurred as the driver of the bus called "Ardiansyah," with police number S 7322 UW, had dozed off.
However, the police are still looking into the cause of the deadly bus accident.
The bus reportedly carried West Surabaya's residents, who were returning home after holidaying in the Yogyakarta and Dieng plateau in Central Java on May 14-15.
