Surabaya, East Java (ANTARA) - Following heavy rain and strong winds on Friday afternoon which extended till night, Surabaya Mayor Eri Cahyadi conducted an inspection of waterlogged areas in the city.
He inspected some water channels and issued directions to his staff. The rainwater reached up to his knees as conducted the inspection dressed in a white shirt and without a raincoat.
A number of residents seemed to encourage Cahyadi. Some of them even clapped. "Come on, sir, God willing, you can," a resident shouted to him on Dharmawangsa Street.
In response, he cupped his hands and replied: "Sepuntene (apologies). We will continue to fix this."
He walked along Dharmawangsa Street as he, the police and his staff tried to clear a traffic jam.
The mayor also ordered his staff to take tactical measures, including deploying two large fire trucks to drain water from canals.
The areas flooded in the rain included Basuki Rahmat Street, Tunjungan Plaza, Dharmawangsa, Airlangga in front of Campus B Unair, in front of Hokky Field, Ketintang, Ngagel Madya, Kertajaya, Major General Prof. Dr. Moestopo, Kusuma Bangsa, Major General Sungkono, Berbek Industri, and Lebak Arum, officials said.
