Jakarta, (Antara) - Several thousand people enjoying Car Free Day here, Sunday, participated in a charity event jointly held by the French Embassy and cultural center Institute Francais Indonesia to support education development of Indonesian children.
French Ambassador to Indonesia Jean-Charles Berthonnet who was attending the event stated that the "Diplomatie Solidaire" event was part of the solidarity week held in all French Embassies, including in Indonesia, to promote social integrity and development of the education sector for children through arts and sports activities in the country, the ambassador remarked at the IFI office, Jakarta, Sunday.
"Arts and sports activities promote several important values of equality, tolerance, solidarity, and respect," Berthonnet remarked.
The charity's donation that was collected by selling some sports equipments, such as tennis rackets, bags, snorkels, and micro by Decathlon store, as well as several new and used books will later be given to some foundations, including Yayasan Bintang Kidul, Yayasan Musik Sastra Indonesia, LP4Y-Atmabrata, and the Pour les Enfants de la Rue, the embassy's press attaché Dwi Setyowati stated in Jakarta, Sunday.
"We hoped this very first Diplomatie Solidaire event in Indonesia would be set as an annual event held by the embassy in the upcoming years," Setyowati noted.
During the event, the embassy facilitated some sport activities, including basketball, table tennis, badminton, and roller blade.
Apart from sports, the event also showcased four giant puppets by the French theatre Les Grandes Personnes group along the Thamrin-Sudirman Street.
The giant puppet group will continue its performances on July 13 at the Ceramics Museum in Jakarta, an organizer Maya remarked.
Following the puppet show, the participants also enjoyed some presentations on the foundation's works in Indonesia as well as art performances at the cultural center's auditorium.(*)
