Jakarta, (Antara) - Two Indonesian hajj pilgrims were killed and 31 others were injured when a construction crane fell at Grand Mosque in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, on Friday, the Indonesian Foreign Ministry said on Saturday.
"The victims died in two different places. In the Sector 4 the dead victim was identified as Masnauli Sijuadil Hasibuan (59) of flight batch MES and at Ajyad Hospital the dead victim was identified as Iti Rasti binti Darmini (57) of flight batch JKS," the ministry's director of Indonesian citizen protection, Lalu Muhammad Iqbal said.
Shortly after learning the accident, Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi and Religious Affairs Minister Lukman Hakim Syaifuddin ordered a team of the Indonesian consulate general in Jeddah and the hajj attache to come to the scene, he said.
The team had been combing the scene to see the possibility of more Indonesians falling victim to the accident, he said.
"The Indonesian consulate general and the hajj technical staff in Jeddah have been coordinating with the local authorities to ensure that the Indonesians falling victim to the accident are treated well," he said.
The accident took place as President Joko Widodo and party arrived at King Abdu Aziz International Airport in Jedda.
The President instructed Religious Affairs Minister Lukman Hakim Saifuddin to visit the Indonesians who fell victim to the accident.
"I have instructed the leader of Indonesian hajj pilgrims (religious affairs minister) and the Indonesian consulate general in Jeddah to give optimum assistance (to the victims)," he said. (*)
