ITS Student Wins Gold in International Mathematics Olympiad

Jakarta (Antara) - An electrical engineering student, Muhammad Yasya (20), of the Tenth November Institute of Technology (ITS) bagged gold in the International Mathematics Competition (IMC) 2014 or the International Mathematics Olympiad in Bulgaria, on July 29-August 4. "The questions in the Olympiad are totally unexpected. The questions need in-depth analysis," Yasya claimed here on Wednesday. Yasya, who is currently studying in the second semester, successfully defeated the toughest opponent from Israel. Yasya was interested in mathematics since childhood. While attending high school, he diligently followed the Olympiad. "For this Olympiad, we get training for two weeks," he noted. Yasya pointed out that he was happy winning the gold in the International Mathematics Olympiad that had participants from 44 countries. This is the first occasion that an Indonesian has won this competition. Moreover, the Indonesian team also won the Champion of Hope title. The Indonesian team comprised seven students: Muhammad Yasya (gold) of Department of Electrical Engineering, Institute of Technology (ITS); Yoshua Yonathan Hamonangan (silver) from the Department of Mathematics, University of Indonesia (UI); Pramudya A (silver) of Electrical Engineering, University of Gadjah Mada (UGM); Taufiq A (bronze) of Mathematics UGM; and Sofihara Alhazmi (bronze) of the Mathematics Education of Indonesian Education University (UPI). Two students who won the title of Champions of Hope were Dian Sitorumi of the Mathematics Department, Institute of Technology Bandung (ITB) and Muhammad Ardiyansyah of the Mathematics Department, UGM.
