Nunukan, N Kalimantan (Antara) - Police arrested two Malaysian in the Indonesian border town of Nunukan, North Kalimantan, for possession of drug.
Nunukan police chief Adj Sr Comr. Robert Silindur Pangaribuan said the two Malaysians identified only as H and A were trying to smuggle a kilogram of methamphetamine from Nunukan to Tarakan on Thursday.
The two had just arrived from Tawau, Malaysia, with a speedboat and were waiting for another speedboat at Nunukan's port of Sei Nyamuk to carry them to Tarakan when police came and examined their luggage, Robert said.
Police found the drug in a bag stashed in hand phone boxes, he said, adding police also confiscated cash worth 500 Malaysian ringgit and hand phones.
"Apparently they hoped to be able to escape police attention when the port was busy," he said.
He said the two were believed to have succeeded in smuggling drugs from Malaysia to Indonesia via Nunukan.
Police are investigating possible connections of the two with other drug suspects arrested earlier in the area, he said.
"It is very likely that the two are members of a syndicate with agents operating in the Indonesia side of the border," he said. (*)
