Six Indonesian Students Win Medals in US Science Olympiad

Jakarta - Six Indonesian students won silver and bronze medals in the International Sustainable World Energy, Engineering and Environment Project Olympiad (I-SWEEP) 2012 held in Houston, Texas, in the United States from May 3 to May 6, 2012.
The students are Aristyo Rizka Darmawan and Fuad Makarim Imran from SMA (High School) Kharisma Bangsa in Banten; Dwi Astuti and Tisa Mahdiansari from SMA Al-Kautsar in Lampung (Sumatra); and Leonardo Ardianto and Christian Edwin Pranata from SMA Santa Laurensia in Banten, announced Houston's Indonesian consulate general in a press statement received here on Tuesday.
Aristyo and Fuad Makarim won a silver medal in the environmental category for their research project entitled "Using Chitosan and Natural Colorants for Raw Material Textile Surface Modifications," while Dwi Astuti and Tisa Mahdiansari won a bronze medal, also in the environmental category, for their project entitled "The Utilisation of Dry Fields Using the Trickle Irrigation Method with Coconut Fibre as Emitter."
Leonardo and Christian won a bronze medal in the energy category for their project entitled "Modification of a Centripetal Force Concept Based Vertical Axis Water Turbine." They also received an award in the Environment-friendly Technology category.
The students received the medals during an award ceremony organised at the George R. Brown Convention Centre, Houston, where US Congresswoman Sheila J. Lee delivered the keynote speech.
Indonesian Consul General Al Busyra Basnur, who was present at the award ceremony, later hosted a dinner for the Indonesian students. (*)
