Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) on Wednesday appointed Saifullah Yusuf as Social Affairs Minister, replacing Tri Rismaharini, who resigned to run in the 2024 local elections.
The inauguration took place at Jakarta's State Palace at 9 a.m. local time, as part of Jokowi's Onward Indonesia Cabinet.
Saifullah will serve in his new role for just over a month, as Prabowo Subianto's presidency will begin on October 20, 2024.

Saifullah Yusuf, also known by his nickname Gus Ipul, previously served as the mayor of Pasuruan in East Java from 2021 until his appointment as a cabinet minister. He was the deputy governor of East Java from 2009 to 2019.
He also served as the state minister for the development of disadvantaged regions from 2004 to 2007 under President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
Yusuf has been a member of the National Awakening Party (PKB) since 2001. He was a member of parliament from 1999 to 2001 with the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) and again in 2004 representing PKB.
He is affiliated with one of Indonesia's largest Muslim organizations, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), where he served as its secretary general. He is also the nephew of former Indonesian president and NU chief Abdurrahman Wahid.
In addition to appointing Yusuf as a minister, President Widodo also inducted Inspector General Eddy Hartono as the Chief of the National Counter-Terrorism Agency (BNPT) and Aida Suwandi Budiman as a commissioner of the Indonesian Deposit Insurance Corporation (LPS).
