Dozens of dancers performed the traditional dance and formed the words "Welcome to Papua", while the countdown video started with the Cendrawasih bird appearance.
A video showcasing Papua's natural beauty, featuring Lake Sentani, the Arthur Monument, Megalithic sites, as well as handicrafts, and Papua specialty cuisine, including Papeda, with yellow gravy, was also played during the ceremony.
"A city with diversity assembled into a harmony that warmly welcomes everyone who comes," the video said.
The opening ceremony of the XX PON aimed to tell the story of Papua's past, present, and future. The creative and cultural performances carried a message about the awakening of Papuan children in the future.
The national sport event is expected to encourage young people in Papua to rise up and excel in sports.
A number of national celebrities and Papuan artists participated in the ceremony. Raffi Ahmad, Intan Saumadina, Piter Ginuy, and Irsa Yoku served as presenters before the start of the opening ceremony.
Meanwhile, Edo Kondologit, Tulus, Ruth Sahanaya, Michael Jakarimilena, Nowela Elizabeth Auparay, and Lea Simanjuntak were scheduled to give performances before the ceremony was officially opened by President Joko Widodo.
The ceremony featured several Papuan artists, including Vien Mangku ft. Qhiba Mansawan, Joanita Chatarine, Papua Original, Trio Papua, Albert Fakdawer, Oyandi Voice, and the Cenderawasih University Gema Chandra Choir.
Some 25 percent of the total capacity of the Lukas Enembe Stadium, which is 40 thousand seats, were prepared for the audience.
Hundreds of medical personnel were kept on standby at several points, such as the entrance gate, during the opening ceremony. (*)
