The tremor's epicenter was located at 9.68 degree southern latitude and 112.79 degree eastern longitude, some 159 km southeast of Malang District, and at a depth of 10 km.
The quake was felt by inhabitants of Lumajang at IV MMI (Modified Mercalli Intensity), Karangkates at III MMI, Blitar at II MMI, Sawahan at III MMI, Kuta and Nusa Dua at between II and III MMI, and Malang at III MMI.
As of 3 a.m. local, a total of 12 aftershocks hit Malang and surrounding areas, according to Musripan, head of the Karangkates meteorology, climatology and geophysics (BMKG) office.
The earthquake was caused by subduction activities of Indo-Australia plate that intruded into the Eurasia plate, Musripan noted.
