Jakarta, (Antara) - Vice President M. Jusuf Kalla's presence at the meeting of the Kabul Process Conference in Afghanistan aims to strengthen Indonesia's position in the Islamic world, University of Indonesia's Islamic Political Observer Yon Mahmudi stated.
"Indonesia is strengthening its position in the Islamic world for creating world peace," he noted on Thursday.
Mahmudi remarked that Kalla could share his experience in solving conflicts in Afghanistan.
"The vice president has important experience in solving the problem in Indonesia. We can see that Indonesia is able to uphold ethnic and religious diversity in a peaceful manner. It might be applied to handle conflicts in Afghanistan," he pointed out.
Kalla had earlier attended the meeting of the Kabul Process Conference in Kabul, Afghanistan, on Wednesday to discuss the realization of peace in Afghanistan.
"I attend this conference to reaffirm Indonesia's commitment in the peace process in Afghanistan," he stated while addressing the leaders in Kabul on Monday.
This meeting holds significance for Indonesia in promoting the peace process in Afghanistan since many suffer owing to the long drawn out conflict that could disrupt unity and inhibit social and economic developments, he pointed out.
Meanwhile, Kalla's visit to Afghanistan came a month after President Joko Widodo had visited on January 29, 2018. The visit was a historic moment since Indonesia's First President Soekarno had visited the country on May 18, 1961.
President Widodo has guaranteed Indonesia's support to tackle the prolonged conflict in Afghanistan.
Indonesia's government has built the Indonesia Islamic Center (IIC) in Kabul that offers the Assalam Mosque and other facilities, such as a clinic, library, and lodge, to be built.
The vice president has conducted the groundbreaking ceremony of a health clinic at IIC. The clinic will be granted to Afghanistan's government and can later be used for offering public health services.(*)
