Surabaya, E Java (Antara) - As many as 36 officers from 22 countries in Asia and the Pacific, responsible for warship operations and control, are participating in a workshop on the Law of Armed Conflict at Sea, being held here from Sept. 19-23, 2016.
The workshop, organized by the Indonesian Navy and the International Committee of the Red Cross, would discuss many case studies regarding the implementation of this law, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Navy, Vice Admiral Arie H Sembiring, said here on Monday.
Sembiring expressed the hope that the workshop will help enhance understanding among the participants.
The ICRC understands that Indonesia is committed to peace building in Asia and the Pacific. That's why the third workshop is being held in Indonesia, Sembiring stated in the presence of the head of delegation of the Regional ICRC Office for Indonesia and Timor Leste, Christoph Sutter.
At the opening ceremony attended by Surabaya Mayor Tri Rismaharini, Sutter recalled that the earlier two workshops were organized in Singapore and Thailand, respectively.
Indonesia is centrally located in the Asia Pacific region, and could therefore help encourage a dialogue on the implementation of the law in the Asia and Pacific waters, Sutter argued.
Senior naval officers from Australia, Bangladesh, China, Fiji, the Philippines, Indonesia, Japan, Cambodia, South Korea, North Korea, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar, Pakistan, New Zealand, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Timor Leste, Vietnam, the US and Russia are attending the workshop.
Participants are slated to visit Indonesia's Naval Base in Ujung, Perak, Surabaya, on Sept. 21. (*)
