Japanese Ambassador to Indonesia, Masaki Yasushi, has expressed the hope that the Aceh government will strengthen disaster mitigation education for the young generation.
"I hope that many young people can get disaster mitigation education in Aceh," he said in Banda Aceh on Thursday.
He made the statement to the media after attending an event marking the 20th anniversary of the Aceh tsunami, entitled "Aceh Thanks The World," in the yard of the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque in Banda Aceh.
He said that to support disaster mitigation, Japan has collaborated with many other countries, including Indonesia, especially Aceh province.
"There has been a lot of cooperation for Aceh. For example, cooperation with the eastern part of Japan called Tohoku with Aceh has been implemented," he noted.
He said that he is very pleased with the disaster mitigation education carried out by Aceh after the earthquake and tsunami disaster 20 years ago, adding that he hopes it will be stepped up for young people.
Masaki said that his visit to Aceh on Thursday was to represent the Japanese government at the 20th anniversary commemoration of the Aceh tsunami.
"I am very happy to be able to visit Aceh. As we know, 10 years ago, Japan also experienced a major earthquake and tsunami," he added.
He said he has seen that after 20 years of the earthquake and tsunami, Aceh has truly recovered and shown extraordinary development.
"We, the Japanese people, know very well how difficult it is to rebuild after the tsunami. I can imagine how hard the Aceh people have worked," he said.
He also emphasized that the relationship between Japan and Indonesia, in this case, Aceh, is getting stronger.
It is hoped that the 20th anniversary of the Aceh tsunami can continue to develop the cooperation that has been built so far.
"The relationship between Japan and Aceh is getting stronger, I hope the relationship will be further developed," Masaki said.
