Surabaya, East Java (ANTARA) - An explosion at the bomb disposal office of the East Java Regional Police Mobile Brigade's (Brimob's) Gegana Detachment here on Monday left ten officers injured, Chief of the East Java Police Inspector General Imam Sugianto said.
"I affirmed that there are no casualties, and the only victims are the ten injured officers," Sugianto told the press after inspecting the accident site on Monday.
He said that the police officers were injured by shards of glass that shattered in the explosion in the office's explosives storage.
The injured officers were attending a training on bomb crime scene investigation in a room located 10 meters from the storage when the explosion went off, the police chief informed.
Sugianto said that all injured officers have received medical treatment at the police's health facilities.
"Praise be to God (the victims) have been treated at Bhayangkara Hospital, and none suffered severe injuries. They will remain at the hospital to allow observation," he informed.
Meanwhile, the police chief said that his side will review the damage caused by the explosion to the office belonging to the Gegana Detachment, which specializes in bomb disposal and counter-terrorism operations.
Structures outside the police office compound will also be inspected for potential damage, he informed, adding that the locations inspected for such damage will include the sub-district office and the local military district command office.
The police are also ready to assist locals whose houses have been damaged in the explosion, he said.
"If any houses are affected (by the explosion), we will communicate (the damage) and repair the houses," Sugianto assured.
The explosion at the Gegana Detachment office shook residents living close to the office on Gresik Road, Krembangan sub-district, Surabaya, at 10:03 a.m. local time (UTC +7).
