Banyuwangi, E Java (Antara) - Youth and Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi is scheduled to open the International Surfing Competition at Pulau Merah beach in Banyuwangi, East Java, on Friday afternoon.
"The minister will open the three-day International Surfing Competition to be held on September 25-27, 2015, at 3 p.m. local time on Friday by releasing young turtles into the ocean to mark the start of the competition," Acting Head of the Youth and Sports Department Wawan Yadmadi stated here on Friday.
He explained that this will be the fourth edition of the event since it was first held in 2012 at the Pulau Merah (Red Island) beach that got its name from a rocky hill that has reddish soil.
Yadmadi noted that surfers from some 20 countries including Venezuela, Switzerland, Germany, the United States, South Korea, Hungary, France, Thailand, and Indonesia are participating in the event.
"National-level competitions will be held on Friday, international-level competitions on Saturday, and the finals for all the levels will be held on Sunday," he affirmed.
He remarked that the International Surfing Competition at the Red Island beach is part of the Banyuwangi Festival 2015, which showcases some sports events to promote the tourism in Banyuwangi.(*)
