Malang, East Java (Antara) - An Indonesian Islamic leader has said now was the right time for the United Nations (UN) and the world to condemn and impose a sanction on Israel for indiscriminately attacking Palestinians. "The incident in Gaza is a humanitarian tragedy and very uncivilized, and so it is time now for the world including the UN to condemn Israel and even impose sanctions," Din Syamsuddin, the chief of Muhammadiyah, one of Indonesia's major Islamic organizations, said at an event at Muhammadiyah University here on Thursday. He said as an organization, Muhammadiyah's stance has been clear and firm in supporting Palestine's independence, and Muhammadiyah has continuously provided moral, political, and even material support to Palestine. He said on July 25 Muhammadiyah will organize a fund-raising event for Palestine in cooperation with national artists, adding that the immediate requirement in Palestine were medical and food supplies. With regard to volunteers who wished to conduct a jihad in Palestine, Din said it will be better if they carry out jihad in the form of public service, such as medical service, as special skills will be required if they wished to get involved in battles in view of Israel's modern weaponry.
