Jakarta (Antara) - Adnan Buyung Nasution, a renowned senior lawyer, has been nominated as a candidate for the Constitutional Court's (MK) Ethics Council, which will supervise MK judges.
Chairman of the Selection Committee Slamet Effendi Yusuf said here on Friday that other nominations include former Supreme Court Chief Justice Bagir Manan, former minister for the empowerment of women's roles Tuty Alawiyah, Father Muji (a Catholic priest) and former parliament member Aisyah Aminy.
He pointed out that the nominees still need to confirm whether they are ready to accept the position if offered.
"We need to confirm their willingness to accept the job because they were nominated by others and did not nominate themselves," he added.
Slamet said around 40 names have been nominated as candidates. The entire list of names will be made public soon, he added.
"We will know then whether they have public support or not," he noted.
Elaborating on the selection process, he said that on December 5, three selection committee members would meet the MK secretary general to discuss the public response to the candidates.
"After the meeting, we will select three Ethics Council members. Only committee members who attend the meeting will make the selections. The MK secretary general is not allowed to participate in the selection process in order to maintain independence," he added. (*)
