Jakarta (Antara) - Indonesia and Poland have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that will lay the ground for enhanced cooperation between the two nations, particularly in mitigating the impact of climate change. Indonesian Environment Minister Balthasar Kambuaya signed the MoU with his Polish counterpart, Marcin Korolec, on the sidelines of the 19th Conference of Parties (COP-19) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Warsaw, Poland, recently, according to a report received here on Thursday. Under the MoU, both nations have agreed to jointly develop technology to control air and water pollution, process waste, implement sustainable development, protect the ozone layer and introduce environmentally friendly technology. Balthasar Kambuaya said the MoU would encourage cooperation in promoting sustainable energy resources in Indonesia, in particular, biomass from solid waste, plantation waste and methane gas from organic waste water. He also invited Polish businesspeople to invest in the development of biomass power plants and technology to encourage production of coal with low emissions in Indonesia. According to the Indonesian Ambassador to Poland, Darmansja Djumala, the MoU serves as the base for the development of cooperation between the two countries in environmental conservation. The signing of the MoU comes after Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono visited Poland in early September this year, he added. (*)
