Our Dead, Four Missing in Brazil Amazon Boat Sinking

RIO DE JANEIRO (ANTARA/AFP) - Four people drowned and four were missing after a boat sank on the Amazon river in Brazil, as 36 people managed to escape to safety, a port official told AFP Wednesday. The sinking of the "Black Diamond" happened overnight Monday to Tuesday, but the toll had not been known until Wednesday. "Some 36 people survived, four are missing and four are dead," said the official from northeastern Puerto Santana, without giving further details. Navy staff and firefighters from the town of Macapa were Wednesday still searching the river for survivors, press reports said. The accident happened some 30 kilometers (18 miles) from Macapa, the capital of Brazil's Amapa state.
