Palangka Raya, C Kalimantan, Dec 8 (Antara) - A team of the Borneo Orangutan Survival (BOS) Foundation has found 166 orangutans in a plantation area owned by Makin Group in Central Kalimantan. Of the 166 orangutans, 19 have died, 100 have been relocated to a forest, and 47 are being rehabilitated, Nyaru Menteng Communication and Education Coordinator Monterado Fridman revealed here on Monday. One of the dead orangutans was badly injured and had suffered 40 gunshot wounds. The dying female orangutan was taken from Barunang Miri Estate or PT Surya Inti Sawit Kahuripan (SISK) oil palm plantation, which is a subsidiary of Makin Group. The Central Kalimantan natural resources conservation agency (BKSDA) brought the animal to the BOS Foundation. "The orangutan had a broken right leg when she arrived here. Her left hand was broken and infected. She had open wounds, which were infested with maggots. She was very thin and malnourished. We could not save her," Fridman remarked. (*)
