Medan, North Sumatra (Antara) - The year 2014 poses a serious challenge for Indonesian political parties due to predictions that no single party will receive a large number of votes, according to a political observer. Dr Warjio MA from North Sumatra University said here on Saturday that competition between political parties in the legislative election on April 9 would be fierce. He said all parties have personalities that are attractive and will use their charisma to draw votes. This year, an opportunity also exists for small and new parties to show their strength, as many large parties are facing problems due to the involvement of their members in corruption cases, he added. Parties such as Golkar, the Democrats and PKS should work hard to improve their image, as some of their members have been involved in corruption cases, he said. "Clearly, no party will dominate receiving votes," he said. Warjio added that the decline in the image of the main parties is well understood by their elite members. They will be forced to think hard to find the best strategy to improve their parties' prospects and win in upcoming elections. "So, it is not surprising if, later on, money politics plays a large role. This is what we must be alert for, as it is not impossible that legislative candidates will make every effort to win," he said. (*)
