Jakarta (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Pratikno asked Google, one of the largest internet service and product providers, to help ensure safe internet use in Indonesia nationwide.
“We have no choice. When we go on the hajj, the option is to fly, even though there are risks, but that does not mean the solution is to walk. That is what I want to say to YouTube and Google,” Pratikno said at 2026 Internet Safety Day here on Tuesday.
He said drafting user guides for parents, teachers, children, and others is insufficient if such guides are not actually used.
“You should not only make guidance, but see how Indonesians, teachers, children, and parents actually use it. If it exists but no one uses it, it is useless,” he said.
He continued, "We are already dependent on you. You are making big money from us. Please, be responsible."
Pratikno urged all internet service and product system organizers to innovate together so everyone in Indonesia can browse the digital world safely and comfortably.
He said the government has repeatedly provided internet use education, but education alone is not enough.
“There should be an automation mechanism to ensure education is delivered. If digital practices damage children’s physical or mental health, we bear the fault,” Pratikno said.
However, the minister appreciated Google’s support in providing internet services in Indonesia and expressed hope for stronger systems to ensure safety and comfort in the digital space for all users.
Previously, Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid also emphasized the importance of listening to children’s views in drafting regulations on child protection in the digital space.
According to her, in addition to child experts and non-governmental organizations, children are considered key stakeholders whose views need to be taken into account.
