The Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) Ministry, on Monday (October 7), opened an exhibition to spotlight the importance of the green building concept to mitigate climate change impacts on 2024 World Habitat Day.

"Buildings are among the highest generators of greenhouse gas emissions, contributing one-third to the total gas emissions," the ministry's Director General of Human Settlements, Diana Kusumastuti, remarked in Yogyakarta.

Speaking at an exhibition themed "Protect the Climate, Protect the Future," she emphasized that implementing green principles in the use of buildings could help slash energy consumption, including by cutting the use of air conditioners.

"The green building concept can help us save energy through the implementation of micro-climate strategies and passive cooling systems," she pointed out.

Kusumastuti then noted that the state had issued Government Regulation No.16 of 2021, which pushes building operators to save energy by 25 percent.

Furthermore, she highlighted that the government had issued PUPR Ministry's Regulation No.21 of 2021 concerning the assessment of green building performances.

The official then affirmed that the green building concept should not only be implemented in Jakarta but also in all districts and cities across Indonesia.

Kusumastuti underscored that the 2024 World Habitat Day serves as an important momentum to reignite the spirit of climate change mitigation by promoting the green building concept nationwide to realize habitable and sustainable settlements and cities.

She affirmed that the "Protect the Climate, Protect the Future" exhibition is also expected to serve as a platform to raise public awareness of environmental preservation while alluding to the first year-long breach of the 1.5 degrees Celsius global temperature increase threshold set by the Paris Agreement.
