Jakarta (Antara) - The Indonesian military is preparing for an anticipated mass movement to Jakarta ahead of the reading of the final verdict in the presidential election dispute next Thursday (Aug 21), an official said.
Spokesman to the Indonesian Military Major Fuad M. Basya, at a press conference here on Wednesday, claimed Chief of the Indonesian Military General Moeldoko had contacted regional military commanders and ordered them to manage the security situation in their areas.
Fuad predicted that some two thousand to three thousand people are gearing up to conduct a rally on Thursday. However, military intelligence personnel will make sure the rally runs peacefully and that there will be smaller crowds demonstrating in the capital city, Jakarta.
"Military Chief General Moeldoko reminded all regional military commanders to pay special attention to possible mass movements from provinces such as West Java and Central Java to Jakarta," stated Fuad.
According to Fuad, a total of 30 thousand military personnel are ready to step in and provide security in various Indonesian provinces ahead of the verdict being handed down by the Constitutional Court (MK) next Thursday. Special attention will be given to the MK building in Jakarta and the government and election committee's buildings.
"All strategic places will be guarded, though we hope nothing untoward will happen tomorrow," Fuad added. (*) Reporting by Syaiful Hakim
