Padang, W.Sumatra - West Sumatra province has a large potential source of biomass energy for power plants mainly from wastes or byproducts of agriculture and plantations, the Governor of West Sumatra Irwan Paryitno said here Monday. In addition in small portions, there are also potential sources of biomass energy from livestock waste, he added. The biomass energy potential in West Sumatra among others are derived from palm oil (3,960.24 kilotons), coconut (75.33 kilotons), rice (1,982.49 kilotons), sugarcane (17.67 kilotons), coffee (24,65 kilotons), cassava (125.96 kilo tonnes) and corn (211.91 kilotons), the governor noted. The sources of oil palm are empty fruit bunches with residue per product ratio (RPR) of 0.23 percent, 55 percent water content and the amount of residual is 910.86 kilotons. The coco palm has s RPR of 0.11 percent, 40 percent water content and residue of 435.63 kilotons while the shells have a 0.06 percent residue per product ratio, 10 percent moisture content and a residue is 237.61 kilotons. The biomass sources from coconut came from coir with a 0.419 percent residue per product ratio (RPR), 10.3 percent moisture content and a residue is 31.56 kilotons. Meanwhile the coconut shell has a 0.12 percent RPR, the water content is 8.7 percent and a residue of 9.04 kilotons. The biomass sources of rice are husks with 0.267 percent RPR, 12.37 percent water content and a residue of 529.32 kilotons. In addition rice straw has 1.757 percent RPR, 12.71 percent water content and a residue of 3483.23 kilotons. Furthermore, sugar cane came from biogas with RPR 0.29 percent, 49 percent water content and a residue of 5.12 kilotons. Meanwhile the top/leaves have 0.3 percent RPR, 10 percent water content and the amount of residue is 5.3 kilo tons. The other biomass energy sources came from coffee husk with a 2.1 percent residue per product ratio (RPR), 15 percent water content and the amount of residue is 51.77 kilotons. From cassava in the form of rods has 0.062 percent of RPR, 15 percent water content and the amount of residue is 7.81 kilo tons. While the biomass energy from corn is cobs with RPR 0.273 percent, 7.53 percent water content and the amount of residue is 57.85 kilotons, while from the stem has 2 percent RPR, 15 percent water content and the amount of residue is 423.83 kilotons.
