Jakarta, (Antara)- Home Affairs Minister Tjahjo Kumolo instructed regional authorities to support and provide necessary facilities to implement the simultaneous regional head elections (pilkada) to be organized by the General Election Commission (KPU) on December 9, 2015.
"As the pilkada is the implementation of political decentralization," he remarked while speaking before participants during the coordination meeting on pilkada 2015, here, Thursday.
The Article 126 of Law No. 15 of 2011 on General Elections stipulates that central and regional governments must help in the implementation of elections in accordance with the existing regulations.
A local government could help deploy personnel, provide election venues and means of transportation for sending election logistics, and monitor the implementation of the elections, he noted.
He expressed optimism that the coordination meeting would help create better synergy between the central and local governments in implementing the local elections.
The meeting was officially opened by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and attended by Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Binsar Luhut Panjaitan, Attorney General H.M. Prasetyo, KPU Chairman Kamil Malik, Chairman of the Election Supervision Agency (Bawaslu) Muhammad, Chairman of the Constitutional Court (MK) Arief Hidayat, and Chairman of the Supreme Court Hatta Ali, among others.
National Police Chief General Badrodin Haiti, Commander of the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) General Gatot Nurmantyo, and Chairman of the National Intelligence Agency (BIN) Lt Gen. (retired) Sutiyoso were also present on the occasion.
The meeting was attended by around three thousand representatives of the local KPU, Bawaslu, police officers, military personnel, and the related government institutions.
In his opening remarks, President Jokowi called on all security personnel to be on alert during the upcoming pilkada to anticipate any conflict.
"To every security personnel, I order you to not just play the role of a firefighter," the head of state emphasized.
The president urged the personnel to take anticipatory measures in order to prevent conflicts.(*)
