Tanjung, S Kalimantan - South Kalimantan province has set its rice production target at 2.12 million tons for 2013 with planting areas totaling 497,3260 hectares, a regional official said. Head of the regional food crop and horticulture office Aus Al Kautsar said rice and second crop requirement has increased from year to year in the province. Aus told a meeting of related officials here on Tuesday that an effective strategy is needed to increase food productivity and production to meet the target. The program to increase the productivity of 4,000 hectares of rice fields, 1,100 hectares of corn fields, 750 hectares of soybean fields and 500 hectares of groundnut fields is expected to be included in the regional budget. With support from the budget the target is expected to be achieved, Aus said. The rice production target per hectare is 427.7 tons with harvest area totaling 497,594 hectares in 12 regencies. Barito Kuala regency is expected to lead over other regencies with production to reach 362,383 tons and planting area of 98,100 hectares. (*)
