Jakarta (ANTARA) - The government has announced plans to fully resume nationwide implementation of the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program on January 8, 2026, following a five-day preparation period.
In a statement issued on Friday, National Nutrition Agency (BGN) head Dadan Hindayana said January 2–7 has been designated for MBG kitchens to prepare and ensure compliance with food safety and quality standards.
He explained that MBG kitchens — officially known as Nutrition Fulfillment Service Units (SPPGs) — will use the period to ready cooking facilities and equipment, strengthen distribution mechanisms, and prepare human resources.
Hindayana added that BGN has instructed all kitchens to prioritize hygiene and to continue serving schools that are ready to receive MBG meals despite the ongoing school holiday.
During December 26–31, the program will continue with a special focus on pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and toddlers, as schools have yet to reopen.
"Distribution to schoolchildren has become optional. We do not consider the inability to collect or deliver meals during school holidays a problem. However, the service remains available for those in need," he said.
Earlier, BGN Deputy Head Nanik Sudaryati Deyang clarified that the agency would not require schoolchildren to receive MBG packages at school during the holidays, dismissing claims that the program was being continued solely to absorb remaining funds.
"Parents or relatives may collect MBG packages on behalf of beneficiary students, but neither families nor schools are being compelled to participate during this period," she said.
She added that kitchens remain ready to distribute MBG meals in the form of dry food to schools that request them.
