Commission III of the House of Representatives (DPR) selected Setyo Budiyanto to lead the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) for the 2024-2029 term following a vote on Thursday.
The commission also approved the names of four KPK deputy heads for the next term, namely Fitroh Rohcahyanto, Ibnu Basuki Widodo, Johanis Tanak -- the only incumbent -- and Agus Joko Pramono, also through voting.
The voting results were validated by Commission III Chair Habiburokhman, who presided over the voting session at the Parliament Complex here. Commission members unanimously voiced their approval of the results.
The commission chair explained the election of the KPK head and deputy heads by the parliament was based on Article 30 of Law No. 30 of 2002 on the Corruption Eradication Commission.
MPs voting for KPK leaders must select five from a slate of candidates to lead the anti-corruption agency. They can mark one of the five selected candidates to indicate their preferred choice for the agency chief.
The voting results showed that Setyo Budiyanto, who last held office as inspector general at the Agriculture Ministry, garnered 46 votes, of which 45 endorsed him as KPK head.
The results also revealed that both Tanak and Rohcahyanto, a former KPK prosecution director, received 48 votes, higher than that obtained by Budiyanto. However, they secured only two and one vote, respectively, endorsing them to lead KPK.
The names of the KPK head- and deputy head-elects will be finalized at the parliament's plenary session. They will be later inducted into office by President Prabowo Subianto.
Apart from deciding the KPK leaders, DPR's Commission III also conducted another vote to determine the composition of KPK's supervisory board for the 2024-2029 term on the same day.
