Surabaya, E Java (Antaranews Jatim) - Micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) have proven able to sustain growth as well as become one of the economic backbones of the province, East Java Governor Soekarwo stated.

"The contribution of MSMEs is huge in realizing the role of digital economy in East Java," he noted on the sidelines of a ceremony commemorating the 73rd anniversary of East Java Province here, Friday.

The 2006 economic census indicated that the number of East Java's MSMEs reached 4.2 million and then increased to 6.8 million in 2012. This number continued to increase and grow in 2016 to 12.1 million.

The governor elaborated that in 2016, MSMEs contributed 57.52 percent to the gross regional domestic product of East Java.

This year's anniversary of East Java is themed "Prospering East Java Through Digital-Based MSME Industries" and is expected to emerge as a smart province through digital economy.

According to Soekarwo, the application of digital economy is a necessity in the face of free market competition and plays a role in accelerating the people's welfare.

"The application of digital economy is a solution to improving competitiveness, especially in production, financing, and market processes. This is important, as all processes will become more efficient and effective," the governor stated.

With digital economy, he added that all information regarding the supply of industrial raw materials in each area can be obtained swiftly. Thus, when a company needs certain raw materials, it can source them from other regions and need not import them from abroad.(*)
