Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA) - An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale jolted northwestern part of Genyem in Jayapura district, Papua Province, at 6.18 local time on Friday morning.
Jayapura Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the epicenter of the quake was located between 2.29 degrees southern latitude and 140.12 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 10 km, or some 34 km northwest of Genyem.
But so far there is no immediate report of casualty and material damage from the earthquake.
Due to its location on the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire," Indonesia is prone to seismic upheaval with parts of the country were rocked by earthquake in the three consecutive days starting Tuesday.
At 10.55 a.m Western Indonesia Standard Time (WIB) on Thursday, Bantul district in Yogyakarta province was jolted a moderate earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale.
The tremor was centered 144 kilometers southwest of Bantul district at a depth of 10 kilometers but no casualty and material damage were reported.
Earlier on Tuesday, two earthquakes respectively measuring 5.1 and 5.3 on the Richter scale shook Mentawai Islands off Sumatra's western coast.
The epicenter of the first quake which struck at 11.45 p.m. was in the sea about 40 km southwest of Sipora in Mentawai Islands at a depth of 16 km.
According to BMKG, the second quake which struck at 11.54 p.m. was centered 39 km southwest of Sipora at a depth of 16 km.(*0
