Surabaya (Antara) - Some legislators have praised the Surabaya city government for holding national polio immunization week simultaneously in all sub-districts in the city on Tuesday.
"I appreciate this national polio immunization week in Surabaya. When I visited a number of locations, I saw residents demonstrating great enthusiasm. Many parents, along with their children under five came to nearby integrated service posts," member of the commission D of the Surabaya city legislative council Laila Mufidah said on Tuesday.
Surabaya has a total of 220,904 children under five that must be immunized against polio, she said.
To ensure the success of the national polio immunization week which started on Tuesday, the city set up 2,992 vaccination posts consisting of 2,294 at integrated service posts, 63 at public health service posts, 36 auxiliary public health service posts, 46 at hospitals, 35 at malls, 59 in market, four at railway stations, 10 terminals, two at port, and 405 at schools.
Deputy chairman of the commission D of the legislative council Junaedi shared Mufidah's view saying he supported the national polio
immunization week. "This is the central government's program that we must support together," he said.
Indonesia was declared free of polio by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2014. However, the risk of importation of the virus into polio-free areas persisted. (*)
