Mataram (Antara) - Former activist of Jamaah Islamiyah (JI) Ustadz Abdul Rahman Ayub said convicted terrorists recruit new follower from among convicts. Abdul said he has visited a number of prisons and found that convicted terrorists did not stop recruiting new members even if they are in jail. "That is why the number of terrorists continue to grow," he told a public discussion between the National Agency for Control of Terrorism (BNPT) and journalists here on Wednesday. Also taking part in the discussion were BNPT officials and leaders of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) and leaders of other related agencies. Abdul Rahman Ayub was once involved in a number of terrorism activities in Europe, Australia and Asia including Indonesia. Abdul said he could not estimate the number of terrorists still at large in the country "but their number is growing." A number of convicted terrorists have their "santries" (students in Islamic study) in jail. The santries were mostly common criminals who share hatred against the law enforcement officers, he said. Many of the frustrated young men are eager to join the terrorist activities after they finished serving their jail terms, he said. It is time for the government to provide a special rehabilitation center for terrorist convicts to give them no opportunity to have contact with other convicts, he said. "I have met a number of young people who were jailed for common crimes turning terrorists after they were released from jail," he said. (*)
