Malang, E Java, (Antara) - The country's largest cellular phone operator PT Telekomunikasi Seluler (Telkomsel) said it hopes to increase income from its data service, sales of applications and contents. In 2013, the subsidiary of state telecommunications company PT Telkom sets income target at Rp60 trillion with data service and sales of applications and contents expected to contribute 20 percent to the total income. Telkomsel's networks director Abdus Somad Arief said after signing a cooperation agreement between the company and the University of Malang here on Friday the number of users of data service has doubled from year to year in the country. Last year, data service, sales of applications and contents accounted for 18 percent of the company's total income of Rp54 trillion. "This year we hopes to increase the percentage to 20 percent and to 33 percent in 2015," Abdus Somad said. He said the number of users of data service was recorded at 55 million in early this year and the number is expected to rise to 80 million by the end of this year. Meanwhile the number of Telkomsel's subscribers is forecast to rise to 130 million by the end of this year, he said giving no figure for the number of subscribers at present. He said the company will continue to expand the capacity of its networks to support its data service business by building more units of 3G Base Transceiver Station (BTS) towers or Node-B. "Around 70 percent of the company's capital expenditure of Rp10 trillion set for this year would be used to build more 3G BTS towers. The rest would be used for the expansion of 2G networks in areas not yet covered by the company's service," he said. Currently, Telkomsel has and operates around 57,000 units of BTS both third generation of telecommunication technology (3G) and 2G types. Abdus Somad said with the fast growing number of users of data service, Telkomsel will continue to expand access to broadband service. This year Telkomsel already reached its target of increasing the number of its broadband cities to 300, he added. "We hope in 2014, all districts and cities in Indonesia have been covered with the broadband or data service," he said. Meanwhile, head of ICT Network Management of East Java division of Telkomsel Galumbang Pasaribu said the division is modernizing networks in almost areas in East Java to improve the quality of its service. "Modernization of 2G networks has been all wrapped up but the process is still underway for 3G networks expected to be completed in April," he said. (*)
