Indonesia's Minister of Population and Family Development and Head of the National Population and Family Planning Agency (BKKBN) Wihaji cautioned that drugs threaten the future of the golden generation and can damage family resilience.

"Drugs are part of the problem, with humans and families as the target. Our task is to prepare the golden generation," he noted in a statement from his office on Friday.

Wihaji conveyed this statement during the agreement signing between his ministry and the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) to support the National Action Plan for the Prevention and Eradication of Abuse and Illicit Trafficking of Narcotics and Narcotics Precursors (P4GN) for 2020-2024.

Presenting the numerical evidence, he illustrated a positive trend in combating drug abuse, noting a percentage decrease from 1.95 percent in 2021 to 1.73 percent in 2023, signifying a reduction of 324,735 people.

Earlier, Head of the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) Commissioner General Marthinus Hukom stated that drug handling is part of President Prabowo Subianto's Asta Cita mission.

He conveyed that drug abuse remains a major problem in Indonesia, with data showing 3.3 million drug abusers in the age 15-64 group, with a prevalence rate reaching 1.73 percent in 2023.

"Therefore, we have three moral standings as the basis for drug problems handling," Hukom remarked in a discussion in Bogor, West Java, on November 25.

The three moral standings comprised viewing drug crimes as a threat to humanity and human civilization, along with the high number of drug abusers.

Second, taking repressive action against drug syndicate networks, where law enforcement must target drug networks as a whole and not just perpetrators at the user level.

Lastly, adopting a humanist approach toward drug users.

Hukom emphasized the need for law enforcers to start changing the paradigm that drug users are victims in need of medical and social rehabilitation and not merely perpetrators.
