President Prabowo Subianto discussed strategic issues during his meeting with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Prabowo commenced the meeting on Sunday (November 17) by commending Guterres' determination for global peace and justice.

"We appreciate, respect, and support your consistency in upholding global peace, justice, and international law. We are inspired by your perseverance," the president noted in the written statement here on Monday.

Prabowo reiterated Indonesia's commitment to supporting causes advocated by the UN, including ensuring food security, alleviating poverty, and addressing human rights violations and the crisis in Palestine.

He also reaffirmed Indonesia's readiness to contribute to world peace, including by deploying peacekeeping troops if necessary.

Likewise, UN Secretary General Guterres lauded Indonesia's strategic role in the global community. He viewed Indonesia as a key partner for the UN.

"We agree with Indonesia regarding important aspects that the world is facing right now," Guterres said.

The UN secretary general highlighted Indonesia's active role in the ASEAN-UN cooperation and in addressing crises in Myanmar and the Middle East.

Guterres echoed the UN's readiness to strengthen collaboration with Indonesia in carrying out reforms in the UN Security Council and international financial institutions to realize global justice for all.

"Indonesia has played its role, and we are keen to further our cooperation with Indonesia to prepare for reforms in the future," he added.

Indonesian officials who also attended the meeting were Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, Foreign Minister Sugiono, Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Djiwandono, and Indonesian Ambassador for Brazil Edi Yusup.

President Prabowo arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on November 16 evening and will attend the G20 Summit in the city on November 18-19, 2024.

The president had been in Peru to attend the 2024 APEC Summit and its sideline agenda on November 15-16, 2024.
