Sidoarjo, E Java, (Antara) - The Customs personnel of Surabaya's Juanda airport have foiled an attempt to smuggle methamphetamine pills by a passenger identified by his initial as MR after he disembarked from an airplane, an official has said.


MR, who is an Indonesian decent, arrived at the airport after he disembarked from Air Asia with flight number XT-323, coming from Kuala Lumpur, according to the Customs Office Director General Heru Pambudi on Friday.


"The perpetrator attempted to smuggle the illicit drug methamphetamine by inserting the drug into a flat screen television," he explained during a media conference at the Customs and Excise office in the city.


He pointed out, 'methamphetamine drug smuggling using a television set as a means to cover it up is a new method  and had only happened now.


"The Customs personnel successfully confiscate the evidence  totaling 2,570 grams of methamphetamine  from the perpetrators," he said.


By foiling the smuggling attempt of the methamphetamine pills, the customs had saved the lives of about 12 850 people. (*)
