Mexico City (ANTARA/Xinhua-OANA) - The bodies of 16 people sprayed with bullets were found Monday inside a van in west Mexico 's Pacific coastal state of Guerrero, the state Attorney General's Office said. Officials said the victims, all men, were found in the vehicle parked near a highway in Coyuca de Catalan, a town in the southern region of the state known as Tierra Caliente, site of violent clashes between rival Michoacan-based drug cartels La Familia and the Knights Templar. Guerrero shares a border with Michoacan to the east. Deputy Prosecutor Fernando Monreal Leyva of the state of Guerrero said that identities of the bodies were unknown at the moment. An anonymous phone call to local police led investigators to the location, officials said, adding the bodies had been shot with varying caliber bullets and showed signs of torture. Monreal said the phone call was made around 9 am local time (14: 00 GMT) Monday. Officials found 11 bodies lying alongside a road in the same area last month, with a message from the Knights Templar threatening rival drug gangs. Mexico's homicide rate has skyrocketed since the government launched a war on drugs in 2006.(*)
