Jakarta - The government is serious in its efforts to develop the National Program for Community Empowerment (PNPM Mandiri) for the tourism sector, Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Agung Laksono said here on Thursday. "The PNPM Mandiri for the tourism sector will continue to be developed to create as many tourism villages as possible across the country," the minister noted. Agung said the development of PNPM could drive the economy of local populations, leading to the improvement of their standards of living. The minister made the statement after the Young Indonesian Businessmen Association (Hipmi) announced they, too, planned to develop the PNPM Mandiri for tourism sector. "I am delighted with Hipmi support and I hope there will be guarantees when marketing those products made by people in the tourism villages," the minister noted. Agung said he frequently found many valuable products in these communities were lacking in terms of their packaging and marketing. "Therefore the support of Hipmi is greatly needed in the development of PNPM Mandiri for the tourism sector," Agung said. (*)
