Jakarta (Antara) - Bandung, the capital of West Java Province, is to be proposed as a member of UNESCO's Creative Cities Network. "Bandung will be one of four Indonesian cities to be proposed as UNESCO Creative Cities. The application was sent last year, and there has been quite good progress. We continuously send the required documents," Chairman of the Committee for Bandung to be Member of Creative Cities Network Fiki Satari said recently. Bandung is being proposed to be a UNESCO City of Design, like Seoul which was designated UNESCO City of Design in 2010. Fiki Satari said Bandung deserves the title because the city has full creativity in design, fashion and handicraft. Meanwhile, the Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, recently designated Enghien-les-Bains of France, Paducah of the United States, and Sapporo of Japan as new members of UNESCO's Creative Cities Network, Paris-based UNESCO said in a press statement, Sunday. Enghien-les-Bains and Sapporo have been designated UNESCO Cities of Media Arts, and Paducah is the most recent City of Crafts and Folk Arts. By joining the Creative Cities Network, new members commit to work jointly and share resources with other UNESCO Cities to promote creativity, reinforce participation in cultural life, and integrate culture into local development plans. The Creative Cities Network now comprises 41 cities from all the regions of the world. A call for new applications for 2014 was launched a few days ago and the deadline. The deadline for the receipt of applications by UNESCO Secretariat is fixed and closes on 20 March 2014. Launched in 2004, the UNESCO Creative Cities Network aims to develop international cooperation among cities that acknowledge and seek to support creativity as a strategic driver for sustainable development, through multi-stakeholders global partnerships. Recent meetings of the Creative Cities took place in Bologna (Italy, September 2013) and Beijing (October 2013). The next general meeting of the Creative Cities network is scheduled to take place in Chengdu (China) in spring 2014. (*)
