Jakarta (Antara) - Vice President Boediono attended the National Seminar on Population 2013 at the auditorium of the National Population and Family Planning Agency (BKKBN) here on Thursday.
The seminar, themed "Population Scenario for Sustainable Development," was organized by the Indonesian Demographic Scientists Association (IPADI) in cooperation with the BKKBN.
Also present at the seminar were BKKBN Chief Fasli Jalal, IPADI official Sudibyo Alimoeso, and several other population figures.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has committed to implementing sustainable development at the regional level, earning the praise of UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) Director Jeffrey D. Sachs.
At an international conference for sustainable development on the sidelines of the APEC Summit in Nusa Dua, Bali, on Oct. 5, 2013, Sachs said, "I appreciate President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's administration for its commitment to implementing sustainable development at the regional level."
The launch of a UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network for Indonesia and Southeast Asia comprising academics, non-governmental organizations, and officials in various related sectors has set an example for other countries to implement such a program, he stated.
Sachs said the world needed sustainable development to maintain growth without destroying the environment.
"Of course, we need energy fundamentals. That's why we need a high-level panel to ensure sustainable development," he remarked. (*)
