Pamekasan, E Java (Antara) - The Association of Madurese Society Members (IKAMA) said it is ready to deploy 10,000 volunteers to support former constitutional court chief justice Mahfud MD to run for president next year. "Right now a total of 10,000 Madurese across the country have expressed their readiness to be volunteers to support Mahfud MD if he runs for president in 2014," the chairman of the IKAMA Executive Board, Muhammad Rawi, said in a press release received by Antara here on Saturday. He noted that 10,000 Madurese have even been included in the association's insurance program, launched at a post-fasting gathering of Madurese leaders in Surabaya, East Java, on Saturday. The ethnic group's commitment to supporting Mahfud MD has been based upon several considerations, he said. Firstly, Mahfud MD has been known as being clean and persistent in the fight against corruption and, secondly, the Madurese from Pamekasan on the island of Madura in East Java also has a good academic record and is considered appropriate to lead the country. "Pak (Mr) Mahfud MD is Madurese and so it is not wrong for the Madurese to have a dream of having a president from their group," he added. To all Madurese in government institutions, as well as in the legislative or judicial institutions he appealed to play an active role in the nation's electoral process so that Madurese in the country could give a positive impact, he said. Regarding the current elections for East Java's governor, he said IKAMA would be neutral, but it would continue monitoring to assure that no violations occur. However, the general chairman of the Association of Madurese Young Generation (Higemura), Muhlis, admitted that some Madurese have confirmed their support to a certain ticket, but said institutionally IKAMA is neutral. As the key speaker at the meeting, Mahfud MD, meanwhile, emphasized the importance of enforcing the supremacy of the law to overcome national problems. National problems such as poverty happened because of violations of the law, including corruption, which has caused the country's wealth to be distributed to only a few people, instead of the entire people.
