By Edy Surpriatna Sjafei Jakarta (Antara) - Indonesia's Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar has affirmed that the recent bombing at the Ekayana Monastery is not related to the violence against Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar. The bomb attack was not in response to what happened with the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar and there is no point in trying to connect the two incidents, he said in a phone interview on Monday. The deputy minister reiterated that the bomb blast was not in retaliation for the massacre of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar. "There is no relation between Islam and Myanmar's local matter. This [the bombing], too, is clearly a local matter," he stated. However, Nasaruddin continued, responding to violence with more violence is really a barbaric act, especially because the bombing occurred during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, when Muslims are trying to achieve spiritual goals. He said the bombing at the Ekayana Monastery defiled the Ramadan month and affected the moods of Indonesian Muslims seeking spiritual happiness. "Violence will not have a place in Islam ever, not just in the holy month of Ramadan," Nasaruddin added. He also urged Muslims and followers of other faiths not to be provoked by acts of hatred that tried to destroy the monastery. "We have to look at this issue more sensibly," Nasaruddin said. (*)
