Mount Semeru wildfire extinguished after burning 3,000 hectares

Lumajang, E Java (ANTARA) - A wildfire on Mount Semeru in East Java has been extinguished after burning over 3,000 hectares, following joint ground patrols and helicopter water-bombing operations.

Isnugroho, head of the Lumajang District Disaster Mitigation Agency, said containment was declared complete on Sept. 5 after no remaining hotspots were detected.

He noted that follow-up monitoring will be conducted by the National Park Management Section (SPTN) Region III Ranupani, under the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Center.

"We coordinated with the National Park Management Section Region III Ranupani in Lumajang because as of Sept. 5, operations were declared complete as no hotspots remained, and follow-up patrols will be handled by the national park authority," Isnugroho said on Sunday.

The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Center reported that the burned area reached 3,072 hectares as of Sept. 1, while field officers continue calculating total damage through Sept. 5.

Burned areas spanned several sectors, including Dingklik Block, Pacis Bincil, Kedaluh, and Penanjakan across 211.24 hectares, alongside Bantengan, Watangan, Jantur, and B29 covering 881.78 hectares.

The largest impact occurred in and around Ranu Kumbolo, where burned land reached 1,887 hectares, Isnugroho stated.

The national park center is still calculating affected land in Krepelan Block, Ranupani Village, where total damage remains undetermined.

A standby team from the Lumajang District Disaster Mitigation Agency and joint units deployed to the wetting area in Krepelan Block toward Ranupani using jet shooters and blowers.

The agency's Rapid Response Team also patrolled the Mount Semeru hiking route up to Post 2 to monitor for new hotspots, reporting clear conditions.

The firefighting operation involved the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Center, Manggala Agni teams, provincial and district disaster mitigation agencies, local police, military commands, community groups, and the Ministry of Forestry.

Rain has also begun falling in parts of Lumajang District, including Pronojiwo Sub-district and areas surrounding Lumajang city.
